The tradition began with the celebrated Subaru Tribeca. It's soon to be carried forward in a new three-row, seven-to-eight-passenger SUV, built right here in the US for American orienteers, at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana. It'll be one well-equipped for the long-hauling off-roader and seasoned traveling family alike, and, no longer a mere exciting rumor, it's soon to arrive. Enter the new 2019 Subaru Ascent.

With the presses no longer held, the new Subaru SUV already looks to be a whole new experience for the large SUV segment. It'll be built on the new Subaru Global Platform, using ultra-durable high-strength steel to ensconce a powerhouse turbocharged 260-horsepower SUBARU BOXER engine, capable of turn and pull at an energetic 277 pound-feet of torque. Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive will likewise come standard for highly controlled handling, alongside X-MODE® with Hill Descent Control and 8.7 inches of ground clearance to make quick work of fording and tacking across rugged terrain. But it's likely the massive maximum towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds, standard raised roof rails, available Class III trailer hitch, and slate of optional Thule racking accessories that ought to appeal to those en route into nature, and they'll have plenty of smart help for the trip.

For one, Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology will now come standard. That's in addition to the availability of Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert as well as Reverse Automatic Braking. Secondly, a trio of cameras – one in the available Smart Rear-View Mirror, a standard Rear-Vision Camera, and an optional 180-degree front camera – will offer situational awareness abilities you may not find elsewhere. Factor in optional LED Steering Responsive Headlights for peering around corners in the dark and STARLINK Safety and Security services, with new smartphone-controlled Remote Engine Start and Climate Control and Plus Concierge services for the model year, and the ride gets further distinctions from the rest.

It all comes together in a sizable, up-to-153.5-cubic-foot cabin, showcasing cloth, durable spill-resistant cloth, and leather seating appointments, available heated in front and with dual second-row captain's chairs an option. You can count on a command center with reach in the form of SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia infotainment with SiriusXM support, which graduates to an 8-inch touchscreen variant with built-in, voice-activated navigation powered by TomTom in higher trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard for your smartphone, Wi-Fi connectivity is available to keep in touch with civilization, and charging your peripherals for the trip's a snap thanks to up to eight USB ports. Open the huge 54-inch power tilting and sliding panoramic moonroof, set available second- and third-row sunshades to your liking, and hit the road. An optional 14-speaker, 792-watt-equivalent Harman Kardon premium audio system should prove symphony entertainment for the ride, and you can access the cargo area and under-floor storage at your destination via an available power rear gate with a height memory function.

2019 Subaru Ascent, when it arrives, will be a sight to see. It'll be even better to test-drive. Until then, however, we await with no lack of excitement.
